Credit-based insurance scores

How credit can affect car insurance prices, and where it can't.

4 min read

In most states, insurers can use a credit-based insurance score, built from your credit report, as one rating factor. A few states, including California, Hawaii and Massachusetts, don't allow it for auto insurance, and others limit it.

What you can do

  • Check your credit reports for free at AnnualCreditReport.com and dispute errors
  • Pay bills on time and keep credit card balances low
  • Ask your insurer whether it re-checks your score at renewal, and whether you can request a re-rate after your credit improves
  • Ask about "extraordinary life circumstances" rules if a hardship hurt your credit; some states require insurers to consider them
