Catalytic converter theft
Why converters are stolen, which cars are targeted, and how to protect yours.
Catalytic converters contain valuable metals, and some can be cut out in minutes. Replacing one can be expensive. Comprehensive coverage usually covers theft, minus your deductible.
Protection
- Park in a garage or well-lit area
- Ask a muffler shop about an anti-theft shield or cage for your model
- Engrave or etch your VIN on the converter; some police departments run free etching events
- Set your alarm to be sensitive to vibration, if it has that option
