Car theft prevention: the layered approach
Simple habits first, then visible deterrents, then tracking.
No single step makes a car impossible to steal. Layers of protection make it slower, riskier and less attractive to a thief.
Layer 1: habits
- Always lock the car and close windows
- Never leave keys or fobs in the car
- Don't leave the car running unattended
- Keep valuables out of sight
- Park in well-lit areas or a locked garage
Layer 2: visible deterrents
- Steering wheel locks
- Alarm system indicators
- VIN etching on windows
Layer 3: immobilizers and tracking
- Factory or aftermarket immobilizers
- GPS tracking devices or services
- Check for manufacturer security updates for your model
Ask your insurer
Some insurers offer discounts for anti-theft devices. Ask which ones qualify before buying.
