Hi there,
This issue's saving: the deductible break-even test
Raising a collision deductible from $500 to $1,000 lowers the premium. Whether it's worth it comes down to one division:
- Ask your insurer for the yearly premium at both levels.
- Divide the extra $500 you'd pay in a claim by the yearly savings.
- If you'd break even in a few claim-free years, and you have $1,000 set aside, it may make sense.
Our deductible calculator does the math.
This issue's security tip
Keyless fobs left near the front door can be targeted by relay devices. Keep them in a drawer away from doors and windows, or in a signal-blocking pouch.
Reader question
"Is a telematics app worth it?" It depends on how you drive and the program's rules. Before you sign up, ask: can my rate go up, what data is collected, and can I leave the program? More in our telematics guide.
